BIOGRAFIE DUTCH:
Leroy Rey is één van de meest creatieve en veelzijdige DJ’s die je zult horen, zeer geliefd door zowel kenners als publiek. Bekend om z’n encyclopedische kennis van muziek, z’n mix-kwaliteiten en, niet in de laatste plaats, z’n energie achter de draaitafels maakt het het erg moeilijk het niet naar je zin te hebben wanneer hij draait.
Op de wereld gekomen in 1974 werd deze toen kleine jongen al volledig gegrepen door alles wat muziek was en om die reden door familieleden ‘geïndoctrineert’ met albums van artiesten zoals Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Third World, The Beatles, Sergio Mendes en nog veel meer. Dit is uiteindelijk de basis van zijn veelzijdigheid gebleken.
Begonnen als DJ in 1992 was hij ook één van de oprichters van hiphopband ‘The Proov’ en produceerde zes tracks voor hun zeer goed ontvangen debuut-album “Traditions” (2000). Ter ondersteuning van het album werd een complete live-band (met Leroy op percussie) uit de grond gestampt, dat de ronde deed langs vele festivals, waaronder ook North Sea Jazz en (tweemaal) Lowlands.
Uiteindelijk zich meer te willen focussen op DJ’en, stapte hij uit ‘The Proov’ rond 2002, om zodoende meer tijd te hebben voor het ontwikkelen en deel uit te maken van andere mogelijkheden en concepten, zoals Wicked Jazz Sounds en Risk Sound System.
Laatstgenoemde is een ‘Real House’ collectief, dat in 2008 “The Sound Is Yours” uitbracht, met een remix van Kerri Chandler die de House Community op z’n kop zette, met een nr.1 hit op Traxsource en een top 10 hit in Belgie tot gevolg. Een USA tour die de crew langs legendarische clubnachten als Louie Vega’s “Roots” in New York en Marques Wyatt’s “Deep” in L.A. bracht, was de kroon op het werk.
Wicked Jazz Sounds is weer van een hele andere orde: een jazz-meets-dance platform, een wekelijkse clubnacht met zowel DJ’s als live-muzikanten dat z’n vaste thuishaven vond in de Sugar Factory (A’dam) in 2005. Met Leroy als één van de voornaamste residents groeide Wicked Jazz Sounds uit tot grote hoogtes, resulterend in optredens op (alweer) North Sea Jazz en Lowlands, maar ook Duitsland, Italie & USA.
Naast dit alles is hij ook al jaren resident van diverse andere clubs in het land, waaronder Jimmy Woo (Amsterdam) en Cordes (Den Bosch), beide sinds 2004.
En alsof dat nog niet genoeg is, is Leroy inmiddels ook weer bandlid, als DJ/percussionist en producer voor de nieuwe incarnatie van wat eens ‘The Wicked Jazz Sounds Band’ was (naam nog onder constructie.)
Kortom, niet in een hokje te plaatsen en om die reden ook zo gewaardeerd: dit is dan ook één van Leroy’s grootste pluspunten. Dus wanneer je z’n naam ziet staan, ga dan zeker checken.

A true musical chameleon, highly appreciated by audiences all over the world, Leroy Rey is one of the most creative & versatile DJ’s you will ever encounter. Known for his deep musical knowledge & mixing skills, as well as energetic delivery, it’s hard to not enjoy a set from this man.
Born in 1974, Leroy was into music early-on and, supported by his family, got surrounded at a very young age with albums by Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Third World, The Beatles, Sergio Mendes and many more, thus laying down the foundation for his versatility.
Starting out as a DJ in 1992, Leroy also was one of the founding members of hiphopband ‘The Proov’ and produced six tracks for their well received debut-album “Traditions” (2000). In support of the album, a full-fledged live band (with Leroy on percussion) was featured on highly regarded festivals such as North Sea Jazz and Lowlands amongst others.
Focusing more on DJ-ing, Leroy quitted ‘The Proov’ at the turn of 2002, in the process creating more time for other opportunities, such as Wicked Jazz Sounds as well as Risk Sound System.
The latter a collective devoted to Real House, which released “The Sound Is Yours” in 2008 which Kerri Chandler-helmed remix took the House Community by storm, resulting in a nr.1 spot on Traxsource, a top 10 hit in Belgium and a USA tour which brought the crew to legendary nights such as Louie Vega’s “Roots” party at Cielo, New York & Marques Wyatt’s “Deep” at Vanguard, L.A.
Wicked Jazz Sounds is a different beast altogether, a jazz-meets-dance platform, powered by DJ’s interacting with live musicians that started out in 2002, with a weekly Sunday night. And never missed one since. Calling Amsterdam club “The Sugar Factory” home since 2005, Wicked Jazz Sounds made Leroy one of their prominent residents and grew out to enormous proportions, with performances at again North Sea Jazz & Lowlands, as well as in Germany, Italy & USA.
Aside of all of this, Leroy also keeps residencies for the longest, given the fact he helms the Saturday night in Jimmy Woo (Amsterdam) since 2004 as well as a few others.
And if this isn’t enough, he became a band-member once again, being a DJ/percussion-player as well as producer for the revisited & revitalized version of what was once The Wicked Jazz Sounds Band (which at this time of writing doesn’t have a new name yet).
Never to fit in one bag -and all the better for it-, this certainly one of Leroy’s biggest strengths, so whenever you get a chance to check out a set by this man, don’t hesitate. You won’t regret it!
